Mt. Kilimanjaro Trekking – Marangu & Machame Routes

Mt Kilimanjaro is the highest dormant volcano in Africa at 5,895 metres and the world’s highest free standing mountain.
Located in Tanzania the ascent is relatively easy making it a major destination for mountaineers and trekkers from around the world.

MT. Kilimanjaro Marangu & Machame Route

7 Days Mt. Kilimanjaro – Marangu “Coca-Cola” Route

Day 1:

Depart Arusha and transfer to Capricorn Hotel based at the foot of the mountain. Dinner & overnight at Capricorn Hotel.

Day 2:

Morning walk through the Kilimanjaro forest spending your night at Mandara Hut at 2,700 metres above sea level.

Day 3:

You start your trek early in the morning to Horombo Hut at 3,720 metres for dinner & overnight.

Day 4:

This whole day trek will take you to Kibo Hut at 5,680 metres for dinner & overnight.

Day 5:

For fit climbers this day will be the final ascent to the summit before dawn to the Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. The night is spent at Horombo Hut.

Day 6:

Morning descent to Capricorn Hotel where the afternoon is at your leisure. Dinner & overnight at Capricorn Hotel.

Day 7:

Drive back to Arusha.

 

7 Days Mt.Kilimanjaro – Machame “Whiskey” Route

Day 1:

Depart Arusha for Moshi with dinner & overnight at a Moshi Hotel.

Day 2:

Drive to Machame village where the climb begins. Walk through shambas (farms) then forest for your overnight at Machame Hut at 3,000 metres. Trek – 6 hours

Day 3:

Continue along the steep ridge going on to rock ridges and heather. The route turns west into a river gorge reaching Shira Hut at 3,800 metres. Trek – 5 hours

Day 4:

Continue east towards the Lava Tower. Followed by your descent to Barranco Hut at 3,940 metres. Trek – 4 hours

Day 5:

A short scramble to the top of the great Barranco and then a traverse over scree and ridge to the Karanga Valley at 4,000 metres. Trek – 3 hours. Beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken glaciers, after climbing out the Karanga Valley the trail ascends a ridge to the Barafu Hut at 4,600 metres. Walking – 3 hours.

Day 6:

An early start for the ascent to the rim of the Kibo Crater between the Rebbmann and Ratzel Glaciers – 4 hours. The last section before the rim can sometimes be snow-covered and an ice axe or ski-stick is useful for balance. From here a further hour leads to Uhuru Peak where there are often fine views of Mt.Meru to the west and the jagged peak of Mawenzi to the east. Descend to the Barafu hut in the giant heather zone on the forest edge. Those with energy may wish to descend to the Reutsh Crater and visit the dramatic ice pinnacles of the eastern icefields.

Day 7:

A three to four hour descent through beautiful forest brings you to the park gate and your waiting transport back to the Hotel for overnight.

Day 8:

After breakfast depart for your transfer back to Arusha.
